Fly Fishing Wyoming – Fontenelle Dam – Pinedale – Jackson Hole
We offer fully guided fly fishing float trips on the Green River Drainage (New Fork included) from the Pinedale area south, almost to the town of Green River, Wyoming in drift boats (wading opportunities available). We have both freestone and tailwater sections of the Green to float and fish. Most of the river fishing is done using drift boats, allowing us to cover large sections of water and elude the crowds. Green River & Bridger-Teton Outfitters is permitted to guide over 100 miles of world class wild trout water. A drift boat is not only an effective way to fish the river, but it is also a comfortable and fun way of transportation. Modern drift boats are stable, allowing the angler to stand on a level surface with the added stability of leg brace (as seen in pictures). The scenery is constantly changing on float trips, giving the angler(s) and guide the chance to witness the landscape of western Wyoming from many different angles.

Our home waters
While the freestone stretch around the Pinedale area is our home water, we are permitted to guide the first tailwater section of the Green below Fontenelle Dam, as well. The Fontenelle Dam is the first and only dam on the Green River in Wyoming. The dam revitalizes the fishery as it flows between the Little Colorado Desert and the foothills of the Wyoming Range. This area can humble anglers of all skill levels, but the rewards can be the biggest fish of your life. We are fortunate to have the privilege of guiding this unique piece of water. The numbers of fish per mile below Fontenelle are lower than you would imagine. Early season only sees 200 and less fish per mile. However, the quality of these fish makes up for the lack of large numbers of fish per mile. We focus on this area April-June and mid-September through early-November. This area is known for its big water, big winds and big browns. Below Fontenelle Dam also provides a healthy rainbow trout fishery, along with both the Snake River Finspotted Cutthroat and the Colorado River Cutthroat.
How we fish
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to live, work and play in the nutrient rich drainage of the Green River. The dry fly fishing is some of the best in the western United States. A few of our primary hatches are drake mayflies, pale morning duns, golden stones, yellow sallies and various different caddis flies. Most fishing trips on the upper river are started with dry flies and ending with dry flies…a real privilege!
Our trout are wild and hard fighting, giving the angler the thrill of often fishing dry flies to actively feeding rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook trout, whitefish and the occasional lake trout or splake if you’re lucky!
Streamer fishing can be a visual pleasure as well. Smashing the banks with any streamer, from a size 10 woolly bugger to a 5-6″ long baitfish pattern, provokes aggressive strikes from our fish. Nymphing is effective as well; however, if we don’t have to watch a bobber, we won’t.
Guided spey/switch casting trips are also available and present the angler with a new and fun technique within fly fishing to catch Green River fish! If you’re interested in learning this new method, please inquire. It is a fun and exciting way to fish our larger waters.
